United Negro College Fund/ Ossie Davis Scholars Program (Due October 15)

The Ossie Davis Scholars program was established to honor the legacy of Mr. Ossie Davis. the renowned writer, actor, activist, director, and producer. The Ossie Davis Scholars program was established by family and friends who understood Mr. Davis' passion for education and his commitment to the young people who will shape our future. The Ossie Davis Scholars program is designed to provide scholarships to African American college freshman attending a four-year Historically Black College or University begining fall 2017Applicants must demonstrate the ability and desire to use artistic activism to proactively address the concerns of humanity.

In addition, applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better; and major in the following fields:

African American Studies, Communications, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Performing Arts, Political Science, Social Sciences, Theater Arts/Drama or  Visual Arts

For scholarship award consideration, applicants must upload an essay and letters of recommendation to the online application. Applicants must complete the application by the deadline.

If selected, applicants will be invited to a semi-final round, which requires the submission of an electronic portfolio of accomplishments and goals. The portfolio may contain pictures, drawings or any other evidence of involvement with the arts as activism. A narrative description of the portfolio must also be included.

Finalists will be designated as Ossie Davis Scholars and will receive up to a $6,800 need-based scholarship award in the fall 2017. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years, provided that students continue to meet the scholarship criteria. For renewal consideration, students will have to re-apply with an updated portfolio each year.
